Foo dogs, also known as guardian lions or Shishi, are mythical Chinese protectors (not actual dogs) that symbolize strength, courage, and guardianship, traditionally placed in pairs at entrances to ward off evil spirits and negative energy, with the male guarding the outside world (paw on a ball) and the female protecting the interior (paw on a cub). They are powerful Feng Shui symbols, often seen in palaces, temples, and homes, representing aristocratic status and spiritual protection.
As gateway guardians and also for holding a special role in Chinese culture, this masterful work executed with a tattoo machine is included in the exhibition Gateways and Portals.
